From Shared Streets to Different Paths: Why David Paterson is Sleeping Out for Change

David CEO Sleepover

Homelessness is often seen as a distant issue something that happens to “other people,” in other places. But for David Paterson, it’s far closer to home than many might assume.

Growing up in Garthdee, David remembers a childhood filled with familiar routine same streets, same schools, same group of friends. On the surface, their lives looked identical. But as the years passed, those shared beginnings led to very different outcomes. Some of those same friends, he reflects, ended up facing homelessness or worse.

That stark contrast is what drives David today.

A Night That Means More Than Sleep

On 16th April 2026, David joined fellow business leaders at Pittodrie Stadium for the CEO Sleepout Aberdeen an initiative that brings executives out of boardrooms and into the cold reality of sleeping outdoors for a night.

But this isn’t about pretending to understand homelessness.

As David himself puts it, this single night can never replicate the ongoing challenges faced by those without shelter. Instead, it’s about standing in solidarity raising awareness, starting conversations, and supporting the charities that work tirelessly every day to provide help, dignity, and hope.

More Than Awareness. It’s Action

CEO Sleepout is part of a wider movement across the UK that has already raised millions to combat homelessness and poverty, supporting hundreds of frontline charities.

Participants commit not just to spending a night outdoors, but to fundraising and using their platforms to create real impact.

David has set a fundraising target of £1,000 each contribution going toward organisations that provide essential support for people facing hardship.

Because while awareness matters, action is what drives change.

“It Could Happen to Anyone”

One of the most powerful truths behind initiatives like CEO Sleepout is simple: homelessness doesn’t discriminate.

It isn’t always the result of a single bad decision. Often, it’s a combination of circumstances unexpected events, mental health struggles, financial hardship that can affect anyone.

David’s story is a reminder of that reality. Same beginnings don’t guarantee the same endings.

David’s sleepout is just one small step but collective action is what makes the difference.
